30 years ago today, the Pet Shop Boys stood in for Simon Bates on his Radio 1 morning show and I was lucky enough to be invited to provide a 15 minute mini mix for the broadcast following the likes of Frankie Knuckles, Carl Cox and Sasha.
It’s difficult to convey just what a big deal this was back then as dance music, despite regularly infiltrating the pop charts by this point, was still rarely heard on daytime radio. Radio 1 in particular, was stuck in the past, still in the grip of the egos of their ageing presenters who were struggling to understand this new generational shift in music. These shows felt like the changing of the guard.
